Douche Froide is an association created in 2002. Our interests rely mainly on music, literature and graphic arts. We began by producing fanzines and we continue working on books, all accompanied with a CD, such as Aux Limites du Son (La Volte, 2006), or on CD-objects like the compilation Icy Breath on Burning Flesh (2010). We have worked with many bands, writers and graphic designers for these releases. Since 2003, Douche Froide is a radio show. You can listen to it live on Canal Sud on Mondays every fortnight from 9 pm to midnight : http://www.canalsud.net/ (go to the broadcasting section). The shows are made of interviews, musical readings, live sessions, reviews, mixes, news, in a weird, dark, evocative and melancholy atmosphere close to the post-industrial and minimalist experimental music styles. Douche Froide also organizes events, concerts, meetings, festivals. The aim of this blog is to give you access to our archives. Over the years, we have met many important artists and bands. Here, you will have the possibility to listen to all these wonderful moments we had, talking with them and receiving them in our radio show studios.

Rotorelief is a label we have followed since its very beginnings in 2005/2006. Christophe Louis, its boss, even participated in a couple of our earliest radio shows. Seven years after its beginnings, the catalogue is now very impressive with artists like Sand, Current 93, Brume, Vivenza, Le Syndicat, Ilitch, Pacific 231, Bryin Dall and many others. Christophe Louis gave us a phone call and we explored the story and productions of the label.

It's been now ten years that Douche Froide exists as an association of persons who share the same interests and passion. And it is a strange feeling mixed with nostalgia and reverie. Our 150th radio show sounds also like a birthday, isn't it? On September 6th, 2011, we met Peter Principle and Steven Brown of Tuxedomoon, just before their concert during the Etrange Festival in Paris. They had created a new soundtrack for the cult film of gay culture, Pink Narcissus. It was an opportunity for us to ask them questions about their relationship to cinema. We played many songs from their 35 years old career. During this show, we also dealt with 70s American cinema and the book Absolute Directors by Frank Buioni.

DF n°147, Interviews with PER ASPERA & TONY LEDUC-GUGNALONS (CORPUS DELICTI), December 19th, 2011

For this show, we had an interview by phone with Tony Leduc-Gugnalons, the author of a biography dedicated to Corpus Delicti, La Déliquescence des ombres (Camion Blanc). This Nice-based band released three albums between 1992 and 1995, full of lushful melodies and ice-cold atmospheres. They are remembered as one of the most accomplished Gothic band in France. In a second part, we broadcasted the interview we had with Tomas from the dark ambient project Per Aspera. We met him as he was invited to play in Paris on September 24th for the Polish Industrial festival organized in Paris by Au-Delà du Silence. As far as cinema is concerned, we dealt with the release on DVD of the film Je veux seulement que vous m'aimiez by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Dolina and Automelodi are two recent bands. Their first albums saw the light of day last year on Treue um Treue and Wierd Records. They are part of the new generation of synth/wave bands and we can just hope the best for them in the near future. We met the French-Belgian trio Dolina after Martial Canterel's concert at La Mécanique Ondulatoire in Paris on November 2nd. The interview with Canadian Xavier Paradis from Automelodi was made on October 15th, at a venue named Le Cri de la Mouette in Toulouse. It was the last show of their first European tour.

On Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd, November, the Brooklyn-based projects, Xeno & Oaklander and Martial Canterel, came to Paris for concerts at the Mecanique Ondulatoire. We were very curious and enthusiastic about seeing them play live, so we took the car, and we were seduced as much by the hypnotic shows they made, as by the very attractive personality and intelligence of Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride. The recording of a magical moment. One month ago, exactly on September 24th, Job Karma played in Paris for the second time since the beginning of the band in the late 1990s. It was an event we could not miss, since it is a band we have often played in our radio programmes. We had an interview with Maciek Frett near the Seine in Paris. The other two members of the band had already left to come back to Poland. It was also an opportunity to deal with the coming Industrial Festival in Wroclaw that will be held from November 10th to 13th, in which many cult bands have been invited.

The Douche Froide compilation

In 2010, eight years after the beginning of our activities, we decided to release a celebratory compilation named Icy breath on burning flesh. This CD contains unreleased songs by 14 international artists of the dark ambient/experimental/post-industrial scene. We have chosen them because they are linked to the history of our radio show and association. We organized concerts with some of them (France Sauvage, Denis Frajerman), we worked on literary projects with some others (De Mange Machine), or we did special radio shows with their music and interviews (Drahomira Song Orchestra, Hermann Kopp, Ilitch, Nihiltronix). Of course, we have loved their music for quite some time and it was the opportunity to work with some of our music heroes, such as David Oliphant from cult bands Maybe Mental and Life Garden. So we released these lovely silk-screen printed objects which were received quite enthusiastically.

Icy Breath on Burning Flesh (un trait d’humour noir, comme une publicité Freedent ânonnée par des cadavres) se révèle un objet magistral de liberté et d’audace, une compilation indispensable également pour tous ceux qui clament qu’aujourd’hui il n’y rien de neuf ou de surprenant. »

Imagine you are on an island, cut off from everything, and you have Chris & Cosey playing for you. That's what happened when we went to the island called Frioul, just 30 minutes by boat from Marseille on July 7th. Furthermore, we had the chance to meet Chris & Cosey and have an interview with them. All that sounds like magic but it was true. You can even hear the seagulls behind us when we are talking. As there are a lot of very exceptional concerts in France in the coming month of September, we have decided to focus on this for this show, apart from listening to some of the albums released recently in the field of musics we are interested in, and some rarities that we like to take out from our shelves for the pleasures of your ears only. So we dealt with the concert of Arnica with Lasher Keen in Toulouse on September 2nd (only date in France), the concert of Job Karma in Paris (first date in France ever) on September 24th and of course the fascinating programme of the Etrange Festival starting on September 2nd until September 11th in Paris. Among the guests, we will find Tuxedomoon (for a unique soundtrack of "Pink Narcissus"), Boyd Rice (for a new score on the fascinating movie "Dementia") and Marc Caro who will re-play the score of his first film "Le Bunker de la Dernière Rafale" thirty years after its creation. Of course, we will attend all these events, and you can be sure that you will hear about all this in our coming shows.

In April, we met the cult Belgian industrial band Club Moral for a long interview as they were invited to play at the Sonic Protest festival.. One part of it was made in English, the other one in French. Here is the French part of the interview. At the end of the interview, you will be surprised to hear the writer and photographer Romain Slocombe, because I invited him to attend the interview as he is working on a book with Dany Devos, the singer and performer of the band.

For this show, we received Philippe H. from band Makina Girgir and label Falco Invernale. We listened to his music and productions, and we asked him to take our mixing table during one whole hour and to play a selection of his favourite records. So it was like his "very best of". Even if the sound of his label can be quite catchy, electro and danceable, his tastes and origins come from some really dark bands of the eighties like Attrition, Coil, Minimal Man, Death in June or Severed Heads. The Pain of our Loss

Last Friday, I was talking on the phone with Jérôme, my dearest friend and recent collaborator of the radio show Douche Froide. We talked about his coming projects, concerts and albums he planned to release on his own label, Verba Scripta. And we joked a lot, of course. He was to come to Toulouse the day after and sleep at my apartment as always. But he never came. Two hours after this phone call, he was on his way to the stars. We loved you so much, Jérôme, and words cannot explain our pain. Many of you might know his music through the records of Porn.Darsteller, his very original analog electronic project, very much inspired by 70s B-movie and porn cinema. He was now working under the name of La Mort de l'Hippocampe, and I had the opportunity to listen to the coming records which were sounding like real artistic masterpieces. I discovered a lot through you, Jérôme, and I have always been fascinated by your talent, ever since we met during the golden days of the Invasion Planete Label. During this last phone call, we talked about our coming radio show which was to focus on Belgian band Club Moral. You admired them a lot and you were to bring pieces from your nice collection of vinyls on the following Monday. I have read today the last email you sent to me and you talk to me about the series Carnivale, which I had given for you to see, and you told me that Adrienne Barbeau was still quite attractive even though she's quite old now. We had so much things to share together, I cannot help but feel this sudden departure as a shock. Today I looked at some old photographs of us together and thought about all these hilarious and wonderful moments we had together. See you soon, Jérôme. We have always laughed at the grotesqueness of life, and I still hear your voice smiling resounding in my head.

We miss you so much.

Well, this was not really an interview, rather short excerpts of conversation with Frieder Butzmann while we were going to visit Notre-Dame in Paris. This cathedral meant a lot to him since he has a real passion for the so-called Notre-Dame school, people like Philippe de Vitry, Guillaume de Machaut and this kind of composers. It is quite surprising when we know the tragi-comic and grotesque aspect of Butzmann's music. Nevertheless, it was a great gift to spend some time with this great name of the German avant-garde. You could listen to him talking for hours because he has such a great culture and humor. This radio show was the opportunity to play some of our favorite songs by him, and some others that are quite surprising, notably his punk or oï singles.

Wolfgang Müller is an artist with a rare intelligence, and everything he did either in solo or with Die Tödliche Doris is just amazing. This is much more than music or sound sculpture, it's even beyond that. So it was fantastic to spend a few hours with him and Frieder Butzmann while they were invited at the Sonic Protest festival in Paris. We had lunch together then we went to see Notre-Dame but, as there were strikes in the city and so many tourists, we stopped at a bar and we spoke about his time working with Die Tödliche Doris.

As we went to Barcelona in February to see an acoustic show in the forest by Arnica, a band we love, we met Gerhard Hallstatt from Allerseelen who was on holidays in Catalonia, but who was also working on his next album on which Nuria from the Barcelona-based band Der Blaue Reiter is going to sing. This interview was part of a very happy moment, around good food and good drinks. A lot of nice people were there, Demian from O Paradis, Sergio from Escama Serrada, Isaac from L'Horrible Passion, David from La Esencia and Francisco from zine Sekuencias de Culto. Even though it was raining, Gerhard took the microphone and sang some of his classic songs after Arnica's concert. A very memorable moment.

We met Asmus Tietchens as he came to play at the venue Lieu-Commun in Toulouse. This guy is a real genius and he has produced so many albums that it was quite hard to know where to begin with. During the same show, we did a review of the French translation by Camion Noir of The Psychick Bible, the cult book by Genesis P. Orridge. Jean-Pierre Turmel of the label Sordide Sentimental did a wonderful job on that book so it was necessary for us to talk about it.

Ataraxia is a band we followed since their very beginnings in the early nineties. The androgynous, powerful voice of Francesca Nicoli was very impressive and we could already feel the originality of a great band. They are very literate people, excellent musicians and they have tried many different things throughout their career which shows their will to always explore new territories. When we learned about their playing in Lyon, we took our car, even if it was a long ride, and went to see them because we knew we would not be disappointed. The show was just excellent, presenting a lot of songs from Llyr and Kremasta Nera, and a heart-breaking cover of "Gloomy Sunday" with lyrics translated into Italian. Francesca Nicoli has charisma and generosity, and I was happily surprised when she told me we could make the entire interview in French, with her charming Italian accent.

The dark, expressionistic and poetic compositions of Thierry Zaboitzeff have always been what fascinated us the most in Art Zoyd's albums. He created a very personal universe and language that is much easily described by images than by words. We met him during the Rock in Opposition festival in Carmaux in which he played some of his most well-known pieces, especially the ones he made for Art Zoyd like "Unsex me here" or "Baboon's Blood". Even though his physical appearance can seem quite terrifying, he is a very charming, good-tempered, almost shy person when you get to talk with him.

Art Bears has never been an easy band to classify. Between 1978 and 1981, they have released three classic albums, full of beauty and creativity, at the crossroads between folk and contemporary music, and based on the eccentric and gothic expressivity of Dagmar Krause's vocals. A reformation of the band with the three original members in Carmaux for the Rock in Opposition festival was something not be missed. The medieval elegance, avant-garde song constructions and hypnotic ceremonial aspect of the show stay very vivid in our memory. We talked with Fred Frith, who speaks French fluently, about this band that was active 30 years ago and it seemed to be a real pleasure for him to re-explore these old songs, as if they had been written by someone else. During this show, we also taked about a very strange (real or imaginary?) film-maker named JX Williams as a book was just released on this iconoclast of the Hollywood film industry.

Sometimes, especially in the Summer season, we take our vinyl collections to the radio studios and we play some of our old records. After a presentation of the coming concerts during the first hour of the show, we then programmed some vinyls, some were quite new, others from our eighties archives. Our friend Jérôme was here (who some of you might know through his projects Porn.Darsteller and La Mort de l'Hippocampe) and also Ottomas (who appeared on some compilations on the Invasion Planète electro label) and who played exclusively soundtrack music. The show lasted more than five hours and a half, but it is always enjoyable to listen to these weird pieces of music.

In July 2010, we organized two concerts with the Catalan band Arnica, the first one in a paleontological museum, with a very powerful ritual sound, and the other one, amongst the ruins of a medieval castle, in the Auvergne region. This show was held during the Fête de la Musique in France. We received two local artists: Clone, who produces a minimal drone ambient music, and Cathale. The music of this woman is very shamanic and primitive, out-of-time and ancestral at the same time, with the voice as the central medium. Both musicians came with their strange instrument, and at the end of the show, they even improvised music together. On the spot. They did not know each other before this show. So it was really improvised, and there was a magic atmosphere during this show.

We met Julia Kent as she came at the Bus Palladium in Paris to present her first album. Alone with her cello, she achieves a very enveloping, emotional music thanks to loops, delay effects and a very varied approach to her instrument. Of course, she is no newcomer since she has played with so many fantastic artists for so many years. Among them, Anthony & The Johnsons, Angels of Light or Jarboe. It was a pleasure to evoke all this with her and to talk about her first release that was inspired by airports and the transitional spaces they evoke. We met William Faith as his band played at Le Crock More in Perpignan for a very memorable show. The audience was hysterical, and it was one of those moments when you feel a real communion between the band and the audience. Their album :Ankoku Butoh: had just been released, so we talked a lot about that and the career of the band. During this same show, we made a review of the French translation of the American classic book of essays Apocalypse Culture.

We met Simon in Toulouse as his band was doing an acoustic show in the beautiful Chapelle des Carmélites, and we met Cinder in Bordeaux for the very first gig of the band in France. This show was programmed just before the show of And Also The Trees in a beautiful chapel in Toulouse, so we started by playing some songs from this cult band, then we broadcasted two interviews we had in Paris with our all-time-hero Peter Andersson from Deutsch Nepal and Albin Julius from Der Blutharsch. It took place on September 21st at a venue called Le Zebre, in a kind of cabaret atmosphere. During this show, we also did a review of the film The Serpent's Egg by Bergman as this strange piece of cinema was just released on DVD in France.

The photos below were taken during the concert in Paris, except for the first one, taken on May 22nd in Leipzig as Deutsch Nepal was playing on the same stage as Nocturnal Emissions.

In September 2009, we had the opportunity to meet Jérôme and Denis Lefdup at Le Snark, the place where they work in Paris. Their last film, Histoire Trouble, had just been projected during the Etrange Festival. These two guys are really geniuses of their kind, using images and sounds in an iconoclast way. In France, their work as graphic designers, musiciens and video innovators became famous with the TV shows Haute Tension in the eighties and L'Oeil du Cyclone in the nineties. It was a time when we thought that everything was possible with the TV medium. Unfortunately, TV became the insane absurdity that it is now. We talked about these TV shows, their last film and many other things during this long interview. It was a great sharing moment with these two brothers whose work has often been compared to The Residents.

We met Canadian film-maker Bruce LaBruce as his film Otto, or Up with Dead People, was projected at the Etrange Festival in Paris. We had been following his cinema for quite a while, and this new film was among his best ones, exploring a melancholy neo-gothic vein we had not been used to in his films, even though humour is still present, and of course a lot of sex between males and artful creativity. Apart from talking about his work and broadcasting the interview we had with him, we also talked about the release on DVD of another film dealing with homosexuality, but in a much more classic vein: Victim by Basil Dearden.

This interview with Danish project Die Weisse Rose was directed in September 2008 in Barcelona, while the post-industrial band of Thomas Bojden was invited to perform at the Mediterranean Autumn Festival, but we had to wait a few months for the actual release of their first album, A Martyrium of White Roses, on Cold Meat Industry. During this same show, we talked about the second and last volume of the French translation of the book Looking for Europe, published by Camion Noir.

DF n°90, Interview with NORSCQ / THE GRIEF, August 3rd, 2009

The Grief was one of my favorite bands as a teenager after I bought the Huis Clos box in a French cult recordshop named L'Atomium early in 1988. I find their music still as inspiring and original today as it was at the time. Norscq was one of the members of this trio and he went on in the electronic music field after the split of the band in 1992. Apart from being a legend, he is also a very lovable guy full of humor. We met him at his apartment in Paris a few weeks before the release of his Gelatinosa Substantia album. We talked extensively about this coming release. At the end of the show we talked about Ettore Scola's Brutti, sporchi e cattivi, which was released on DVD in France, but the very end of the show is missing.

For this show, we had an interview with Geoffroy D. from French martial-synth-pop masters Dernière Volonté. The interview was made in Paris after their show at Le Café de la Danse. At that same moment, my colleague Sebastien told me about a neofolk band named Spiritual Process who were making a cover song of Dernière Volonté's "L'Eau Pure". As they were charming young guys, we invited them in our studios for an acoustic show. They brought some records they liked, and then we broadcasted our extended interview with Geoffroy, made in a strange basement with the eyes of a crazy pitbull dog staring at us.

When we met Jarboe, it was such a strong emotion that we almost felt like bursting into tears. Apart from her artistic talents and the fact that she has one of the most impressive female voice of our era, she is such a generous person, with that slow-speaking Southern flavour in her accent, and she has such a charisma that you can only be seduced. Meeting her was a real gift, and I hope we will have the opportunity of talking to her again in the near future. We dedicated this radio show to her work, which is very eclectic, and that's a good thing!
